I think this lecture by the Physicist/Philosopher Sean Carroll explains what physics teaches us about how the world is constructed on a non-mathematical, layperson-comprehensible level, about as well as it can be done. Literally everyone who wants to think of themselves as intelligent and aware of the world we live in should understand physics on this level.
