We're being told that Democrats in the House are unified in refusing to go along with a Continuing Resolution to keep the government operating unless it includes some kind of commitment to the separation of powers and respect for Congressionally mandated funding and agencies. Well and good as far as it goes, but I think we need to go further. We need to say to them that unless they do this and include a declaration of the intention of Congress that the president may not impound funds, make laws without acts of Congress, or violate laws relating to the execution of programs and retention of federal employees, without consent of Congress. This is hardly radical. It's just a restatement of the Constitutional separation of powers. But we need to demand that they agree to this, at minimum, or Democrats will not vote for their resolution. Because, it appears, they just don't have the votes to pass it without at least some Democratic votes. This is our only leverage.
I have been queasy... very queasy... about Jeffries's leadership lately. Now is the time for him to stand up. He should give an address to the nation, with hullaballo and fanfare, explaining the Constitutional crisis and what the Democratic caucus wants to do to fix it... and directly ask the public for their support to save our Constitution and rein in the excesses of the Mad King. Now is not the time to be mealy mouthed and proceduralist. Now is the time for bold leadership and appeal to the public to support real American values.
America was already great.... MAGA is trying to make it a hellscape, and it's our job as citizens to resist, fight back, and STOP THEM by whatever means we can.
