Trump trashes historic alliances

Our closest allies, including the "Five Eyes," which historically have exchanged intelligence at the most sensitive level (Canada, UK, Australia, NZ), are clamming up. They realize, correctly, that the US can no longer be trusted as an ally or as a secure recipient of shared intelligence. European allies now realize they cannot rely on the US to fulfill even the most basic treaty commitments. And this includes the North Atlantic Treaty. NATO hasn't ceased to exist, quite, but I think it's safe to say that the countries of the alliance no longer quite believe that the US will fulfill obligations under the treaty, including Article V that requires joint defense. This is in addition, of course, to his having started a damned trade war with our closest neighbors and allies, Canada and Mexico. It is so unbelievable, it's hard to absorb.

This is truly sad, and, unfortunately, the damage is already irreparable. We can never return to "normal," in this or many other regards. There is no more "normal." This is a going to be a significant part of Donald Trump's legacy. And everyone, everyone, who fails to speak out against this regime and resist its incursions into our way of life and values, is complicit. I'm looking at you, Mitt Romney, George W. Bush, Condoleeza Rice, and many other Republicans who have simply stood by and wrung their hands without making clear that they stand in unity with the RESISTANCE to Trump and Trumpism.
