It's not the most significant thing that's happened, not even this week, not even Thursday. But it so encapsulates the outright Stalinism of the Trump regime it's worth noting. Some while back Trump fired the director of the Kennedy Center. Too woke. Made himself director. Decided... because it's what malignant narcissist dictators do, to rename it the "Trump Kennedy Center" (realizing it might not go over so well to take the sainted Kennedy name off of it entirely). So they hold a meeting by Zoom or whatever, but when one of the members of the board tries to speak up to oppose this insane plan, she is muted and not allowed to speak. The White House announces the vote to rename the now much diminished national arts temple was unanimous and within 48 hours the lettering on the building is installed. Which couldn't possibly been done had the lettering not been ordered and the installation contracted for long before there was any "vote" to do this stupid thing.
Some day we will be rid of this menace, and America will wake up from its long nightmare and collectively ask itself "How could we have let this happen?" A great deal of real, serious reforms to ensure that the democratic underpinnings of the American republic are restored, enhanced, and safeguarded are going to be necessary. But I sincerely hope that, even though every little town's municipal water treatment plant in the Red Belt may still be called the Donald J. Trump Municipal Sewer Facility or whatever, we must take his besmirched name (apologies to Mary Trump) off of every single national property to which it has been attached, and if the disgusting brawlroom and Arc de Trumphe are actually built, they should be ceremoniously razed with explosives. Sometimes a little collective amnesia is a good thing.
Yeah, I know, perennial optimist I. But what choice do we have? We have to keep on imagining a better future. And a future without Trump is the first step.
